A LOOK AT THE COMPANY

Unknown to many, it is not only the 4 kilometer white sand beach of BORACAY, or the unsurpassed KALIBO ATI-ATIHAN FESTIVAL that attracts people to the province of Aklan, but it is also because Aklan is the home of the finest Abaca, Piña, Silk, and Rafia products in the Philippines and probably in the World market.

With this in mind, your travel south of Manila could prove profitable and informative knowing that a company that produces high quality indigenous fiber cloth is around the corner for one to see its products and manufacturing processes.

The manufacturing process is an experience and measure of love for each step in the production is a painstakingly slow process and a measure of incredible patience, a trait that is increasingly lost in the modern world.

Just imagine, separating and segregating each hair from a bunch of hair, joining one end to the other by knotting to form miles and miles of strand of knotted hairs. What more if the material is piña fiber which is finer than the hair.

Indeed, the tasks are awesome but such are done with dedication, love and satisfaction. The products are exquisite handcrafted material, a product of love and tradition, an epitome of the Filipino people - a loving and caring people.

Heritage Arts and Crafts is a company based in the capital town of Kalibo in the province of Aklan, in the island of Panay, in the southern part of the Philippines.

Its owners, Javier Vega Legaspi and Anna India Delacruz Legaspi are natives of Aklan and are the initiators, developers and sellers of piña, piña seda, banana seda, banana or abaca cloths that are now being used by both local and foreign fashion designers. They have also improved the quality and texture by improvising new weaving techniques and blending these materials with each other.

Heritage Arts & Crafts is a medium size company with a weaver base of approximately 150 weavers supported by an indirect production group of about 300 persons. It is a company with a social conscience for its main thrust is not only producing exquisitely beautiful handcrafted products but provides livelihood opportunities to its people. It is also concerned with the preservation of country's rich history and tradition by focusing on the revival of its traditional crafts. It is training the younger generation so that the torch can be passed on.
